As you know, Jonesy and I (and the rest of the gang) have been finding interesting things that are uniquely Australian, whether it's in nature or man-made.

This is one of the latter.... the Stobie pole.

After the first dozen years of the 20th century, a problem had arisen: how to construct durable, long-lasting power poles throughout South Australia when you've got yourself a shortage of suitably long, strong, straight and termite-resistant timber.

Along came James Cyril Stobie, design engineer for the then Adelaide Electricity Supply Company with his invention: a power line pole made of two steel joists held apart by a slab of concrete in the middle.... the "Stobie pole".
