:iconwyatt6teenplz:: Thursday, August 8th (cont'd) - "Hey guys!"

It is late afternoon here in Mount Isa, and we decide to take in an underground mine tour.

We managed to book ourselves into doing the Hard Times Underground Mine tour---as it turned out, among the last tours for today. This would certainly give us an insight as to how mining is and has been done in/around Mount Isa now and in the past.

The only negative thing about this tour is you are not able to take along your camera for photos, but other than that, this tour was and is worth every penny. I can honestly tell you it was awesome and brilliant, and dare I say it was and is probably the best paid tour we have done to date.

First, you are given a set of orange overalls, a heavy belt, gum boots, helmet and a head lamp. Just so you really look the part of an actual miner. Then you are taken down by a lift (called the the Alimak Cage) and into the tunnels, and shown how everything was done. The guides enthrall you with their stories of the good times and the hard times that are had working deep under the earth. Here you get some hands-on experience handling the air-leg drill, carrying the drill bits (which are massively heavy), and seeing the tractors and machinery in action, while you feel the earth rumble with the firing of the blast face.

Man, it was intense!

Even though this mine was never an actual working mine, it was purposely built for Mount Isa Tourism by Mount Isa Mines. You're not allowed to take your camera with you, but you would get a group photo as you go down in the lift for just $10. For what the mine tour cost us, it also includes entry to the Old Times Museum and to the Riversleigh Fossil Centre.

[...]

Afterwards, there was time before dinnertime to go some impromptu shopping. The guys and I checked out the sights around the inner city, while the girls (and Nikki, too!) checked out some of the stores (and yes, Mount Isa has two shopping centres) and souvenir shops.

Of course, Jonesy lamented the fact that this place does not have a Hungry Jacks. The last one was back in Townsville (the last one we visited was, I think, back in Brisbane, for "brekky"), and the next one won't be until Alice Springs! But I think he'll manage....!

[...]

Now.... what's this about... a RODEO??! *groan*

[Jen, along with Nikki, tries to comfort and reassure him. Again....

[...]

Another what-if postcard and journal entry from two 2½th-year university students Jonesy and Nikki, along with the rest of the gang, exploring the Land Down Under.

Ah home. Still hot and dry there I expect so I'm certainly happy I'm in Singapore right now. I'll take hot humid and wet over dusty and hot any day.

Sorry I wasn't there to say hi by the way.
