SERIES: <PREV | NEXT>

JONESY: Thursday, July 22nd - Got up early, ate breakfast, and leaving Broome early to avoid the afternoon heat (which we sooo enjoyed these past couple of days!), we started hitchhiking our way south along the Double-You-Ay coast.

BTW, by "Double-You-Ay", I mean WA, Western Australia! Natch!

Anyway, as we reached a roadhouse just outside Broome, a road train driver approached us and offered us a lift westward, as that was where he was headed. Actually, he was headed for Karratha, in order to drop off his multiple-tank-trailer-load of natural gas at nearby port of Dampier on the coast. Rather a dangerous load, but the driver assured us he'd be driving carefully!

[...]

Anyway, about eleven hours later, we reached Karratha, and our driver said that was as far west as he was heading. But that was okay, Nikki and I were still further on in our journey than we were at the start of today. We wished him good luck and he continued on his way to Dampier.

We found a place to stay for the night and dined at the Golden Arches!

JONESY: Friday, July 23rd - Another lucky day for us! At the very campground we were staying, we met an elderly couple that happened to be heading to their cottage at Shark Bay, north of Carnarvon, and were happy to give us a lift to Carnarvon; afterwards they would head up to Shark Bay.

In two hours, we were on our way with the elderly couple, all the way westward to Carnarvon.

NIKKI: Saturday, July 24th - Got up early, and we marvelled at the spectacular view of the Indian Ocean we had from the campground where we stayed. We decided to have an early breakfast out.... in town.

[...]

While we relaxed after breakfast, we met up with a guy working for Main Roads WA (WA's state version of our Department of Highways back home) and was heading back home to Joondalup (one of Perth's northern suburbs and regional cities), and was kind enough to lend us a ride, as we ourselves were heading to Perth, too!

[...]

Thought you should know that, though it was still staying sunny, it was getting cooler the more southerly we were travelling, between 30°C at Broome and 26°C at Karratha and Carnarvon to 20°C around Perth, and by the time we arrived at Joondalup, it was about a chilly 14 or 15°C! Latitudes do apply here, too....!

So, anyway, here's a pic of Jonesy and me, having arrived at Joondalup about 9½ hours later, with a bit of time enough for us to get to the nearest TransPerth train station and Perth bound!

Another what-if postcard and journal entry from two 1½th-year university students Jonesy and Nikki, exploring the Land Down Under.
